Fallout 1 Walkthrough - Shady Sands

Shady Sands is located 5 squares east of Vault 13 on the world map. A small village founded by some of Vault 15's inhabitants, it played a vital role in the formation of the NCR (New California Republic). Shortly after the events of Fallout: New Vegas, Shady Sands was destroyed by a nuke, on the orders of Vault 33's Overseer, who wanted to eliminate all factionalism. But let's not worry about that for now; Shady Sands is just at its beginnings when you first visit it.

Fallout 1 Shady Sands Walkthrough

Shady Sands is a peaceful, self-sufficient community. That means that it has its own irrigation system, so it can grow its own food. If not for raiders and Radscorpions, these people would have no problems. The small village is the first place where the player is introduced to bartering and bottle caps, the main currency in Fallout, backed by the merchants of the Hub.

At the gate, talk to Katrina. Go through all dialogue options with her to get some well deserved experience. If you followed all my instructions so far, now your character would level up, reaching level 2. Open the Character window by pressing the [CHA] button on the bottom right, and assign your new skill points. I recommend putting all of them in Small Guns.

The house immediately to the left as you enter the village has a Scout Handbook on its bookshelf. Grab it and then open your inventory [i] to read it. That will give you some points in the Outdoorsman skill (affects dehydration and rockfalls when traveling on the world map).

fallout 1 walkthrough shady sands aradesh

Talk to Aradesh, the leader of Shady Sands. He will tell you about their Radscorpion problem. Offer to help. You can barter with him for a nice spear that will come handy when bullets are low. Aradesh will tell you to talk to Razlo, the village's doctor. Go do that. He's on the house to the bottom left. Next, go inside the top right house and meet ̶M̶a̶x̶ ̶R̶o̶c̶k̶a̶t̶a̶n̶s̶k̶y̶ Ian.

Ian was a guard for the merchans of the Hub and was shot during a raid by bandits. The people of Shady Sands saved him and he's been living here ever since. Inquire about the Hub and Junktown, so they will become available on the world map. Then ask him if he wants to help you. You can either offer him 100 caps, or ask him to join you for "a piece of the action". If successful, you'll get 100 XP for convincing Ian to join your quest. 😎

Now head over to the right side of the village (step into the green hashed area to the east). There's another Scout Handbook in the house immediately to the right, and a rope. You'll find another rope and a sledgehammer (4-11 damage; don't use it as a weapon if you have Strength less than 6) inside the house at the bottom (careful, they can be hard to spot).

If you read both magazines you probably noticed it got dark outside. Some NPCs (in-game characters) won't talk to you at night in Fallout, so now would be a good time to rest. Click the [PIP] button at the bottom right, then hit the bell icon on top left and choose "Rest until noon". Sleeping will also restore your HP!

Fallout 1 Shady Sands Guide

What is there to do in Shady Sands? Talk to Curtis, a farmer in the garden to the east, and ask him what he's doing. If you have a Science skill of at least 40% you can teach him about crop rotation, and gain 500 XP and +2 reputation (a reflection of what people think of you based on your actions -- affects how some people react to you when talking to them).

Talk to Seth at the gate and ask him to take you to the Radscorpion caves. Ice the nasty buggers and take as many of their tails as you can. Grab the two cases of 10 mm JHP ammo lying on the ground (can be hard to spot). By killing all the Radscorpions you stopped their spread and got 500 XP for it. Go back to Shady Sands and talk to Razlo. Tell him you got a sample of the Radscorpion poison and you'll get a bottle of antidote and 250 XP for helping out. Barter with him and get rid of the Radscorpion tails you collected in the cave.

Make sure you have at least one rope in your inventory and return to Vault 15.
